Behind every high-performance adhesive is a detailed process of formulation, rigorous testing and continued evaluation.
In our in-house R&D laboratory, we support everything from monitoring product consistency to assessing bond strength and developing adhesives around specific customer requirements.
Monitoring the chemistry behind the adhesive
Our chemists routinely monitor key product properties and raw materials to maintain consistent characteristics and product quality from batch to batch.
We can also develop bespoke formulations when an existing adhesive does not fully meet the needs of a particular process, substrate combination or end use.
Testing structural bond strength
Physical testing allows us to assess how a finished bond responds under load.
Our SAS520 2-Part High-Performance Epoxy Paste, for example, undergoes bond strength testing as part of the evaluation process.
SAS520 provides high peel, shear and impact strength, alongside resistance to heat, water and a range of industrial chemicals, making it suitable for demanding bonding environments.
These tests give us practical information about the characteristics of the cured bond and whether they meet the demands placed on the finished assembly.
Different adhesives, different tests
The testing method also needs to reflect the adhesive and materials being bonded.
For S1358, peel testing is carried out using substrates such as cloth-backed PVC leather and painted steel. The adhesive is used across automotive trim, upholstery, furniture and laminate applications, with a toluene-free formulation also available.
For two-part products such as S49, tensile testing is used to examine how the cured bond responds as increasing force is applied.
Using the appropriate test for each adhesive gives us a clearer understanding of how the product behaves under the conditions relevant to its intended use.
R&D built around the bonding challenge
From analysing formulations to evaluating finished bonds, our R&D laboratory allows us to investigate adhesive requirements in detail rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
